3 – MUSIC RITUAL (evening)

ABOUT THE TRAINING

In this training you will learn how to compose music on the fly.
Even if you have no previous musical experience.
You will also learn how to use your music for healing your mind and your body.

TOOLS YOU WILL NEED

All you need is a creative mind and whatever sound providing instrument.
Yes your (or friend’s/wife’s/husband’s) body can do the work too.
If you want to record your session, you need to buy a stereo microphone and a digital recorder.
(I recommend mini digital recorders as much easier to handle and carry around vs laptop)

HOW TO DO IT

There are 5 STEPS you need to do.

STEP 1 – SELECT YOUR INTENTION ANGLE
STEP 2 – CLOSE YOUR EYES AND CONNECT WITH YOUR HEART
STEP 3 –
PRESS RECORD AND START PLAYING YOUR INSTRUMENT  (30 – 60min) 
*STEP 4 – WRITE PROGRESS (MUSIC) DIARY
*STEP 5 – REPORT YOUR MONTHLY ACHIEVEMENTS TO OTHER VIP CLUBBERS

HOW LONG TO DO IT

You will not wnat to hear this again, but here is the simple answer: FOREVER!
But when you start, try to do it as a 7 /14 or 30 days challenge.
I suggest you to start with 30 days!
I had one rule when I started hiking and and it went like this:
If I miss one day, I need to add two more at the end.

So if I missed 3 days in my 30 day challenge,
I needed to add 6 more days till I sent out my report and finished my challenge.
And it worked!
I belive same scarcity works on any type of challenge!
And music is a very passionate and good feeling challenge, so you won’t have issue if you commit to 30 days.

CAN I DO IT WITHOUT REPORTING / RECORDING

Yes, reporting to me and other clubbers is just a way to support each other.
You can commit to 7 / 14 / 30 day challenge first.
See how the training works for you.
Then when you figure out that this routine is very good for your health, continue with longer sessions.
Your end goal at the end should be – commit for life & change your mind.
MUSIC will adjust to your intention.

For your first challenge don’t bother with equipment and recording process.
You can do that later. It’s not important at this stage.
At this stage only one thing is important – TO FIND YOUR MUSICAL HEART!

WHAT IS MY MUSICAL HEART

I believe that you can heal your mind and body only if you play music out of your heart.
Sound vibration follows heart intention and makes a powerful LOOP.
That loop I call “EMOTION INSIDE-OUT”, and is the KEY of any music healing process.
If you use music to heal yourself, it needs to be produced in the same way as if you heal others.
I did a lot of group healing sessions with Planetary Gongs and Crystal /Tibetian bowls in the past.
One thing that connected all was always my intention and the sound I was sending to others.
If my intention was clear and positive, the sound experience was awesome for everyone.
If I was under stress while I played, my session mostly sucked.
And this is very important thing that you need to understand!
That’s why I’m doing my morning and hiking rituals daily.
I can heal you and me only if my intention is clear and positive.
We can experiement with bad thoughts and wibes in our sessions,
but the GENERAL INTENTION should be on the POSITIVE SIDE to effect the perforer and the audience.
And that is the most IMPORTANT CHAPTER of my teaching.

WHERE & WHEN

I do it after my kids go to sleep or when they play games, or when I’m alone, or when I feel special, or sad.
I do it all year long and I have severail rooms in my studio where I do my sessions.
Best place to do your music ritual is somewhere very near to your house, so you don’t have to drive there.
If you have extra room in your house that you don’t use, you can make your practice room very easily.
All you need to do is empty it, put something on your wall so the ‘weird echo’ goes away, and start playing.
Some students make their practice spots in their garage, some outside under trees, and some they dig a hole in the ground.
Be creative and check ‘DIY practice music places’ online.
As at the end, only one thing is important:
To play improvised music daily +  to become better intentional musician with an end goal – TO GROW AS A HUMAN.

WHAT INSTRUMENT SHOULD I USE

The one that called YOU and said: GRAB ME, PLAY ME, KISS ME.
You can experiment at the beginning to find your best lover (or kisser), but then stick to it during your whole session.
Longer you stick to one instument, better you will understand it, and more growth opportunities will happen.
What if I don’t have any instrument?
SIMPLE – Use your VOICE, BODY, or buy one INSTRUMENT.

SHOULD I PRACTICE DAILY OR WEEKLY

Depends at what stage you are and what you want to do here.
I am composing music for more than 25 years but if I would start from the beginning,
I would commit to 30 days and try to experience this wisdom every day.
Maybe it will trigger somehting in me, and maybe it won’t.
But I would give it a shot, as you never know in life what will happen next.
If you don’t try, you will maybe never know why guitar is so addictive instrument.
And why drums are so powerful stress releaser.
Or why voice is one of the best emotional instruments we all have inside.
But majority of us don’t know these things, and even more of them will not commit and try to learn them.
You have only one life, and one music heart!
It’s time that you open it.

STEP 1:
SELECT YOUR INTENTION ANGLE

Same as in the morning and your hiking session, you need to first select your intention.
In music we have lots of ‘angles’ we can explore in our sessions.
I call them angles but not sure if the term is right.

By angle I mean:
– COLOR OF SOUND
– BEATS & PATTERNS
– HARMONIES & TONES
– MONO/STEREO/SURROUND LOOPING
– FEELINGS & EMOTIONS
– HEALING ENERGY
– CREATIVITY
– RELAXATION
– RECORDING PURPOSE (hiking, dancing, cinema, etc)
And a lot more.

I don’t want to confuse you here but let’s stick with above ones that are most basic ones.
If you will learn just few of these angles, you’re good to go for the next 10 years.
You will have more then enought of material your can experiement with!

HOW THE ‘SESSION ANGLE’ WORKS:
Before each session I try to set main objective for my session.
This is like main topic or main tone of my recording.
If I do that, then my playing and tone will be different.
If I don’t do that, my playing outcome will be mainly ‘feeling & emotions’ oriented.
By using an ‘session angle’, my improvisation practice gets another dimension.
And in music you can have one or several dimensions.
You can combine them together in sessions or you use only one.
And here comes the big beaty – with some practice, you can later invent your own ‘angles’.
Or combine mine and intersect with some secret ‘angle’ of other musician.

NOTE: Not sure how many of musicians out there know about these angles,
but my students here know them so we can exchange them.


IMPROVISE TO FIND YOUR BEST ANGLE:

Most of my life I played music out of heart.
And with combination to be very creative.
Now I understand that I was healing myself and I was using music for creativity spike.
In last 5 years when I started to play guitar, I got a lot of new ideas about my past experiences and I started to improvise more with intention and focus.
Results were amazing and I started to understand my music from a very different angle.
All these training and wisdom about so obscure thing wouldn’t come out, if I didn’t improvise before long enought without any intention.
So crucial for new players is to find their best angle, that will work good for them.
You don’t have to follow my rules with intention angle here, but I think they can help you and guide you to higher dimension.
At the end one thing again is important – More you know, more options you have.
And also – More you understand your music, more you can understand yourself.
At one point you will see that intention angles in music are very similar to intention angles in life, business and relationships.
So use them and improvise with them to get more IDEAS.

 

Few EXAMPLES of MUSIC INTENTION ANGLES YOU CAN USE IN YOUR SESSION:
– Today I will try to focus on color of sound. I will experiment wih putting layers of sound on top of each other, so I see how color changes.
– Today I will experiment with non sync rhythm in my drumming
– Today I will try to see what happens if I play one tone in different combinations for 10 minutes
– My session today will be under the tree, and I will use only object I will find outside
– I will try to mimic russian language and improvise with my voice
– Today I will try to make music for my dancing heart

STEP 2:
CLOSE YOUR EYES AND CONNECT WITH YOUR HEART

Before each session I close my eyes for few seconds, and try to connect with my heart.
Here my morning ritual comes in, as everyday I want to be in that warm ‘Sun Glory’ zone.
If you want different emotional trigger, you can visualize some event from your life.
Here you can use many triggers as you want.
Also a HIKING session trigger can get you to a lot of different places.
For me only one thing is important now – and that is the MUSIC HEART.
All my music I create should come from the heart at first.
And that is my MAIN ANGLE for the past 25 years.
Inside that angle I can do many weird tweaks with no problem.
Intention stays the same.

So if you’re beginner, or advanced musician, find or re-find your HEART.

STEP 3:
PRESS RECORD AND START PLAYING YOUR INSTRUMENT 
(30 – 60min session) 

I won’t go into details of how to play different instruments in this training.
Main point of all music improvisation is to connect your soul with the instrument you’re playing.
After some practice, you start to develop a relationship that leads toward better sound.
Try to explore instrument and your voice as there are no limits.
Most of the time I learned different instruments by grabbing them and start playing.
The process of how I play is very simple.
I repeat tones in 2 / 4 / 8 loops.
Then I try to progress with new tone ideas on top of my existing repetition.
To put in other words, try to play a repetative melody or rhythm, and then try to find something that goes well on top of that.
This is all you need to know at this step.
The next step is the heart.
You need to find a balance between your joy and tone.
Then crazy things will happen!

NO-DISTRACTION MUSIC
In my improvised sessions I don’t like to make weird and sudden changes.
All my music is kind-a dreamy music that places you in some other dimension.
It’s made in A MINOR scale but you can use whatever scale you want.
You can improvise in different scales and see what scale calls your heart.
If you don’t know nothing about scales, don’t make your life hard.
Play however you want and soon you’ll discover something you will want to dig in more.
Follow one rule and this is – LOOPING.
Loop your mistakes, loop your ideas, loop new rhythms, new patterns, new ideas.
LOOPING is repeating and repeating is addictive.
LOOP in whatever way you want!

Before I started to use loopers heavily, I was looping on different instruments and aranging recordings in Ableton.
Ableton is a software that is used a lot on electronic music.
You can press play and record loops of your playing.
Then you combine them together and slowly songs and beats come out.

In acoustic, electic and electronic scene today, most important thing is GOOD LOOP.
A sample that triggers an emotion.
In your (and my) case – HEART EMOTION.
Heart emotion then connects with your INNER emotion and LOOPS it OUT!

Music is born and you are HAPPY because you made it!

And only that is important.

PRO-TIP:
For first few weeks if you’re complete beginner, don’t try to learn anything about the instrument.
Don’t watch YouTube lessions, don’t search Google.

You need to follow just this RULE: 
Grab, Play & let your HEART finds your LOOP.

STEP 4:
WRITE PROGRESS (MUSIC) DIARY

Same as in MORNING & HIKING SESSION, but this time focus on music sessions.

When?
Immediately when you press stop on your recorder and after your put your instrument down.

What to write?
About you ANGLE or about your big IDEA that happened durring your music session.

Format?
Same as in morning and hiking diary. 1-3 sentences, one A4 page, small story, big poem, nice drawing, good joke.

Why?
Because everyday you will grow, only if you remember at least one thing that heppened and opened your eyes.
Or your heart. Or your ears.

Can I have one diary for morning, hiking, and music session?
Yes you can.

STEP 5:
REPORT YOUR MONTHLY ACHIEVEMENTS TO OTHER VIP CLUBBERS

Please send me your challenge diary after you finish your music and mindset+body challenge.

If you do just paper notes, please photo or scane them and compress into a Rar or Zip format.
If you write e-diary on your laptop, please send me Word file or PDF.

I will use use your writings to learn from your ideas and to inspire other clubbers.

For music sessions recording, please pick just your best one and convert it to 320kbps MP3 file.

Please select session 30-60 minutes long.
